Eavesdropping on Bluetooth Headsets

By , December 31, 2007 8:51 pm

An interesting video was posted on Digg that demonstrates just how easy it is to eavesdrop someone that is using a bluetooth headset. Interestingly, the person doesn’t need to be in the middle of a phone conversation. The mic can be used to eavesdrop as long as the device is turned on and discoverable.

My Rant of the Day

By , December 17, 2007 8:30 pm

Well, it’s 8pm and ANGEL (Penn State’s Course Management System) has been sluggish or unusable for most of the day. This is frustrating since it’s finals week and there are things that I would like to access on ANGEL for studying. Thankfully, I was able to submit a paper on ANGEL earlier today before it really started having problems. However, it’s very frustrating to see a critical service become practically unusable for any amount of time, especially during finals week.

I’m not pushing blame on anyone in the University, but there should be some level of accountability when production services fail. Ever hear of an SLA?

On top of that, the ITS Alert for this issue is about as descriptive as.. well.. okay it’s not very descriptive at all.

Yes, I’m cranky.

New Domain

I’ve been trying to come up with a new domain name that I can use for my personal site. I’ve been having a lot of trouble thinking up one that isn’t taken. However, I finally decided on one this morning and in a few hours I should be the owner of iBoyd.net. Yes, I know the ‘i’ prefix is very cliché these days but it’s all I could come up with. I’ll probably purchase a new hosting plan somewhere and use the site for testing web applications, class projects, etc.

Now that I think about it, I guess I subconsciously came up with iBoyd after watching the iRack video posted below. Hmm…

IST302 Project: Class Alerts

By , December 3, 2007 1:34 pm

My final project for IST302 is an SMS alerts system that lets Penn State students receive alerts when their classes are about to start. The system scrapes the Schedule of Courses website for course information and stores it in a mySQL database. A cronjob runs every minute to search for classes starting in 15 minutes. It then queries the user database to see if any users are signed up for alerts for those courses.

Students can sign up for the service with their Penn State Access accounts. There is no registration process. They simply log in with WebAccess, enter their phone number, and start adding courses.
